 Subaru Legacy

Love. It's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

Introducing the all-new 2010 Subaru Legacy. When choosing what to drive, make sure it's something that drives you.

Love the possibilities.

A new hobby.  A new favorite drive.  A new way to engage with life every day.  Subaru vehicles are uniquely designed and equipped to get you out, to connect you to the road, and to inspire you to embrace more of life's opportunities.  It all starts with the balance of Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.  Standard on every Subaru, it gives you the stability and control to drive where you want-always with the greatest confidence.  That poise is matched with the reassurance of being protected by award-winning safety.  It's why we hear again and again, "I love my Subaru."

Love.  It's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

All wheels.  All roads.  All the time.

By combining the balance and road adhesion of Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with the stability of the SUBARU BOXER® engine, Subaru builds more than cars- we build confidence.  Confidence that can help you enjoy getting there as much as being there.  And it can help you feel the freedom to live more of the life you love.

Better grip to better perform.

Better Balance

Every Subaru is built for AWD from the ground up.  Each one features a longitudinally mounted engine that feeds power to the all-wheel drive system in a straight line.  Which results in a balanced drivetrain with almost total side-to-side symmetry that is free of the extra components some other systems need to route power.  This symmetry and balance means stability that helps make driving your Subaru safer and agility that makes it more fun.

Quicker Response

There are only four small patches of rubber that keep you in control of your vehicle.  The more your tires are engaged, the more control you have.  Subaru Symmetrical AWD keeps power routed to all four tires all the time, so it doesn't have to react to slippage that has already occurred.  Rather, it keeps your tires as fully engaged with the road as possible.

Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive

In any driving environment, control of your vehicle comes from one place - where your tires meet the road.  Rough or smooth.  Curves or straight-aways.  A sure grip of the road can give you the control to step around danger, and the engagement to find exhilaration in every strip of asphalt.  Subaru has spent nearly 40 years developing a system for traction and control that employs an almost perfectly symmetrical layout to maximize power delivery to the wheels, and to create balance and stability that can heighten your enjoyment of every experience you have behind the wheel.

Efficient Design

Because some systems lack the simplicity of Subaru Symmetrical AWD, they could not sacrifice efficiency, but also can incur more wear and tear.   Subaru routes power directly from the engine to all four wheels to keep components- and frictional power losses- to a minimum.  All while maximizing the seamless feeling of traction whenever you need it.

Horizontally Opposed Design

The pistons move in 180-degree opposition to each other on a horizontal plane, so each naturally cancels out the vibration of the piston opposite it.

Durable Design

The engine's flat design is inherently rigid, and reduces the amount of vibration that "V" or inline engines-with more upright pistons - are subjected to during operation.

Lower Center of Gravity

The flatter profile and perfectly symmetrical design of the engine block, and the fact that it sits lower in the chassis, make the overall vehicle more stably balanced and resistant to side-to-side motion than other designs.

Smoother Operation

Step on the accelerator and the revs come on smooth. While there's plenty of power when you need it, it never compromises your comfort or control.

Increased Reliability

An engine subjected to less vibration lasts longer.  It's no wonder 94% if Subaru vehicles built in the last 10 years are still on the road today.[1]

Greater Agility

The vehicle responds more quickly to changes in direction, which gives a feeling of tightness in turns.  And it's less likely to become unstable during maneuvers, giving you an increased feeling of being in control at all times.

Subaru Boxer Engine

We think about engines a little differently.  We believe an engine should deliver both power and control.  That way, it performs as well in rush-hour traffic as it does on a winding road.  That's why every Subaru is powered by the SUBARU BOXER® engine. Its horizontally opposed design and symmetrical layout provide powerful, yet smooth acceleration, but also give drivers balance and stability that ser it apart from engines with a "V" or inline configuration.  It's an insightful difference that has the power to make driving more engaging.

My right foot's my new best friend.

How do you define performance?

Refined.

3.6-liter 6-cylinder

A wealth of ultra-smooth power at the ready.  That's the hallmark of the 3.6 liter 6-cylinder - the largest SUBARU BOXER® engine available.  It produces 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque, moving the Legacy 3.6R models with effortless confidence over the road.  This commanding engine is matched with the ease of a 5-speed automatic transmission, featuring SPORTSHIFT®

Technology and paddle shifters, which allow you to easily control shifting for more direct access to engine power.

Thrilling.

Turbocharged 2.5GT

For those of you who desire the kind of lift in your day that only high performance can provide, the all-new Legacy 2.5GT is more ready than ever to oblige.  It features an intercooler that's 25%larger that last year's - increasing the power this engine puts to the pavement.  You'll now feel the turbocharged punch of 265 horsepower and 258lb-ft of torque.  And it's designed to respond to throttle input better than ever.  A 6-speed manual transmission with new, performance-oriented gearing keeps you always in control of the action.

Efficient.

2.5-liter  SUBARU BOXER®

The all-new 2.5i offers more value than ever.  This 4-cylilnder engine generates 170 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque.  Ample power for confident driving.  Especially considering that, when paired with Lineartronic? CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), you can get 30 miles to the gallon[2]. With the 18.5 -gallon tank, you'll spend more time enjoying your getaways and less time filling up.  What's more, every mile will be quieter and smoother than any previous Legacy.

Advanced.

Lineartronic CVT

Experience smooth performance and save money at the same time.  Lineartronic? CVT is an innovative technology that can reduce the amount you spend on fuel.  Now available on Legacy 2.5i models, it eliminates the need to shift, thereby preserving momentum.  And your engine always stays in its optimal rev range for maximum efficiency.  In automatic mode, it infinitely adjusts the transmission to match your needs.  Or use the paddle shifters and  6-speed manual mode for quick access to power and torque on the fly.

Bringing power and control into balance.

Quick-ratio Steering      Front and Rear Stabilizer Bars      Double-wishbone Rear Suspension

Dynamic Handling

Throw the all-new Legacy into a corner, and forget everything you think about a spacious sedan.  Despite being significantly roomier than last year's, the all-new Legacy is more athletic than ever.  Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive holds tight to every inch of asphalt - carving hairpins with predictability that makes the car feel like an extension of yourself.  Its redesigned chassis features a stiffer sub-frame than last year's and the same lower center of gravity, making for exceptional stability.  And it's gained less than 50lbs, so it reacts to changes in direction quickly and effortlessly, which means you'll be pulling through s-curves with inspiring precision.

Responsive Suspension

Years of experience competing in the automotive acrobatics of rally racing have helped Subaru develop a suspension system that communicates with the driver.  Its 4-wheel independent design maximizes the feel you have for the road.  While the double wish-bone rear deflects the worst of the bumps without unsettling the chassis.  With MacPherson struts up front, it's a tight, yet supple ride that always leaves you in touch and in control.

More space.  More focused than ever.

Bluetooth®  Wireless Capability      harman/kardon® Audio      Voice-activated Navigation

As sharp as it is comfortable.

Your Cabin

The interior of the all-new Legacy has been completely redesigned to give every passenger more room.  Hip room in the front, legroom in the back, and headroom all around have seen generous enhancements for greater comfort.  You'll also find features and design that make this space more purposeful and rewarding than ever.  Opt for the 440-watt, 9-speaker harman/kardon premium audio system- with Bluetooth hands-free calling standard-and immerse yourself in your music with its stunning clarity.  And with the newly available voice-activated navigation system, you can program destinations and find points of interest with spoken commands.  This totally new nav system also features upgraded Bluetooth capability to include streaming audio.

This is how we show our love.

Building Cars That Last

Life is too important to slow down with a car you can't rely on.  That's why we build each of our vehicles with the highest standards of manufacturing, with designs that are inherently tough, and with engineering that can keep you going-and keep you out there.  This commitment is why 94% of all the vehicles we've built in the last 10 years are still on the road today.

And why a Subaru can keep its value, and stay out of a landfill longer.

Supporting Partners That Care

Subaru has spent decades building relation ships with dozens of organizations that believe in building a cleaner, greener, healthier and more hopeful world as much as we do.  That's why you'll see us offering support at events like Dining Out for Life, or promoting responsible recreation with Leave No Trace.  Our recent Share the Love sales event harnessed the generosity of Subaru owners to raise neatly five million dollars for deserving causes like the ASPCA and Habitat for Humanity.

Subaru Active and Passive Safety

When it comes to feeling confident, nothing is more important than feeling safe.  That's why Subaru places safety as one of our highest priorities, and why we think about safety in 360 degrees.  First, we engineer the Legacy with exceptional control and advanced accident-avoidance technologies to help keep accidents from happening in the first place.  Then, we build it with protection technologies that have made it a Top Safety Pick[4], 2006-2009.  The end result is a car that - in a worst-case scenario-is one of your best possible bets.

Stopping Power

Powerful and reliable vented disc brakes are teamed with advanced technologies to help you stop short of danger.  Antilock brakes help make sure you don't lose traction, and the advanced Brake Assist system helps ensure maximum pressure is applied to the brakes as quickly as possible un an emergency situation.

Exceptional Control

Safety begins with avoidance.  The traction and balance of Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and the stability of the SUBARU BOXER® engine provide you with the outstanding control you need to react to hazards.  Every Legacy also comes standard with VDC electronic stability control, which can detect a loss of control and intervene to keep you on your intended path.

Increased Awareness

Before you can avoid danger, you have to see it coming.  The all-new legacy is now available with a rear vision camera.  This feature- standard with the navigation system-gives you a clear view of the area behind your vehicle, so can always be in charge of your surroundings.

All-around Protection

Our Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frame is exceptionally strong for maximum resistance to impact energy, while its unique configuration helps divert that energy away from occupants.  Also, front, front-side and side curtain airbags[5] -standard on every Legacy-surround outboard occupants in the event of a crash to further help prevent injury.

The Earth isn't disposable.

Neither is a Subaru.

The Legacy is designed for maximum enjoyment out on the road, but at Subaru, we put just as much emphasis on minimizing what we leave behind.  First, we build vehicles for maximum durability, because the more time spent on the road is less time in a landfill.  It's why 94% of the vehicles we've built in the last 10 years are still on the road today1.  We also work diligently to cut waste before the car ever rolls out of the factory.  In 2004, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc.  (SIA) became the first manufacturing facility in the U.S. to reach zero landfill status- nothing from its manufacturing efforts ever goes into a landfill.  Subaru facilities in Japan have achieved similar goals in reusing and recycling.  And, because clear skies are just as important as clean landscapes, the Legacy has been recognized with Partial Zero Emission Vehicle-PZEV[6]- status and Smartway®[7] certification. It achieves such cleanliness and efficiency without the negative environmental impact required to manufacture many vehicles with battery-based drive systems, and without compromising performance and versatility.
